Goal setting is an important part of life mentoring – which probably comes as no surprise!
Most people are really good at setting SMART goals (that’s goals that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound). When we set them we’re genuinely committed to making them happen, but sometimes all the enthusiasm in the world still won’t help you actually achieve your goals.
So here’s the advice I give my clients: take baby steps.
You are more likely to be successful if you break your goal down into mini-goals and then focussing on achieving little ones per day. Sometimes trying to tackle a big goal leads to procrastination and a sense of being so totally overwhelmed.
However, mini-goals are great because they’re easily achieved, they keep up the momentum toward your overall goal and there is always something to look forward to everyday.
So when it comes to goals – dream big, but act small. Before you know it you have achieved your ultimate goal. And also, this way you get to enjoy the journey and the final destination.
